A useful fit for

Consider it for short hard-floor routes around furniture where a light format, forward/reverse dust illumination and its conical hair-handling head are valuable.

The main tradeoff

It is not a carpet vacuum; its 0.08-quart listed bin is small, the 30-minute figure is a maximum, emptying is manual, and a spare battery or powered upholstery tool is not included.

Dyson PencilVac Fluffycones review: a compact, hard-floor specialist rather than an all-floor replacement

The PencilVac Fluffycones is built around a very particular job: quick, nimble pickup on hard floors, especially where a conventional head feels awkward around chair legs, edges, or low furniture. Its slim body, four conical brush bars, and forward-and-back lighting make that route distinctive. The same specialization is its most important limit. Dyson says this model is engineered for hard floors only, so a home with carpet needs another machine or a different configuration; the name “vacuum” does not make this one a mixed-floor stick.

A different kind of floor head

The Fluffycones head uses four soft conical bars. Dyson says their tapered shape moves long hair toward the cone ends, where it forms a small clump that the head can pick up. That is a more specific answer to hair wrapping than a generic brushroll claim, and it is useful for a hard-floor route where long strands often gather along edges. It is not a promise that hair will never need attention: the owner’s guide explains how to remove and rinse the cones, then leave them to dry fully. The hair-management feature changes the cleanup routine; it does not remove routine maintenance.

The head also illuminates dust in both travel directions. That can make fine material easier to notice while you work, but it is visual feedback, not a measure of sanitation or a substitute for a deliberate pass. The swiveling head can turn around furniture legs, spin in place, and lie flat enough to fit beneath furniture with 3.7 inches of clearance. Measure the gap in your room rather than assuming every low sofa will fit.

Where the compact format helps—and where it narrows the choice

Dyson’s product table lists a 1.5-inch body width and a 4-pound weight. The slim handle is intended to sit in the palm, and the lightweight format may be appealing for short room-to-room pickups or frequent stairs. The number is a manufacturer figure, not a measured carrying test, and Dyson’s separate general FAQ rounds the weight to about 3.9 pounds. Treat it as a useful published scale, not a guarantee that every overhead or handheld task will feel effortless.

One supplied Fluffycones floor head keeps the setup simple. It also means there is no carpet head to swap in. If your route crosses area rugs or carpet, do not assume the soft bars are suitable just because the head can move over a threshold. Dyson explicitly says the PencilVac is engineered for hard floors only. A more conventional package with a named carpet head, such as a V12 with its separate Motorbar, is a better comparison when the job includes carpet; that configuration requires changing heads when the route changes.

There is a second PencilVac configuration, the Fluffy, with a Micro Fluffy head instead of the four-cone Fluffycones head. Dyson describes that head as soft woven nylon with anti-static carbon-fiber filaments for hard floors. The Fluffycones version is the more focused option if its tapered bars’ hair-handling approach and edge-to-edge movement are the reasons to buy. If those differences are not useful, compare the Fluffy rather than paying attention only to the shared slim body. Neither version is a carpet solution.

Small bin, short maximum runtime, and hands-on care

The listed bin volume is 0.02 US gallon—about 0.08 US quart. That is a small collection space, so expect more frequent pauses than with a full-size stick, particularly when loose debris or pet hair fills the bin quickly. Dyson’s syringe-style emptying mechanism pushes compacted dust into the bin, but this is still a manual emptying routine, not an auto-empty station. Empty it when debris reaches the MAX mark, as the manual instructs.

The published maximum runtime is 30 minutes, with a 3.5-hour charge time in the product table. The manual identifies Eco as the longest-running setting, Medium as a balance, and Boost for intensive spot cleaning; the maximum is not a promise of 30 minutes in every mode or on every surface. A removable click-in battery makes an extra battery possible, but the exact package lists one machine, one Fluffycones head, a storage/charging dock, a rotating combi-crevice tool, and a charging cable—not a spare battery or powered upholstery tool.

Budget time for care as well as charging. The guide says to rinse the cones and dry them fully, wash the filter at least monthly, and allow at least 24 hours for the filter to dry before refitting. The bin and seals also need to be completely dry after rinsing. App pairing is part of the setup for additional machine guidance and settings; the LCD and buttons provide the basic controls and remaining-runtime display without making the app a substitute for maintenance.

Who should choose it

Choose the PencilVac Fluffycones when a light, narrow, maneuverable tool for hard-floor pickup matters more than large capacity, long sessions, or carpet coverage. Its clearest advantages are a distinctive hair-handling head, illumination in both directions, and access around and under furniture. Look elsewhere if one vacuum must handle carpet, if you want a larger bin or an included automatic station, or if a powered mini tool is essential for upholstery. The right question is not whether this is the most advanced cordless stick; it is whether the hard-floor route it is designed for is the route you need.
